How many of us have been annoyed by a cell phone ringing during a movie? Or, have been guilty of this ourselves?
For millennia we have been teaching our students what it means to be a good citizen. Society demands this of us. The explosion of new technologies in the 21st century adds a new, multi-dimensional facet to the meaning of citizenship.
Mike Ribble and coauthor Gerald Bailey tackle the challenges we now face in their book Digital Citizenship in Schools. Digital Citizenship introduces educators to the nine elements of digital citizenship, providing professional development ideas as well as lesson plans and classroom activities.
Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship
Mike began his career in 1990 as a high school science teacher and shortly thereafter, principal. Since then, he has served as a network administrator for a community college and later continued his own education at Kansas State University, earning his Doctorate in Education while working as the Instructional Services Coordinator for the College of Education. His work on Digital Citizenship was the culmination of a three year dissertation project. In 2007 Mike returned to K-12 education, acting as the Director of Instructional Technology for the Manhattan-Ogden School District in Kansas.
